  • What has Rural Voices Done to Date?

    (a) Receive funding from the Lawson Foundation to work with 2 rural, remote or northern communities in every province and territory to develop responsive community based services for children and families via the C.A.R.S. Process (Communities Acheiving Responsive Services). The project is hosted by C FAN in Langruth, MB

    (b) Co hosted a national Think Tank with regard to rural, remote and northern child care in Ottawa, February 2006

    (c) Co hosted a Strategic Planning Session in Ottawa, February 2005 with participants from every province and territory as well as government and organizational representation.

    (d) Gathered data for the regional rural child care directory. The directory will be available to programs, policy makers and others. Included in the directory will be program descriptions, practical resources, training opportunities, research, community mentors and advocacy. To be released in February, 2004.

    (e) Set up a web site to provide Internet access to the directory and to provide information on the project and rural child care issues.

    (f) Provide a toll-free telephone number to provide free access to needed information and support 1-866-255-0687 (national)

    (g) Held a fact finding forum in Saskatchewan and Manitoba and planned a Regional Rural Child Care Symposium for October 2003, in Saskatoon. These events will draw experts and practitioners together for an exchange of ideas and a strategy-sharing session.

    (h) Reviewed provincial government initiatives to assess the impact – both positive and negative – on service delivery to rural families in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. These findings were made public at the Rural Symposium in Saskatoon.

    (i) Participation in the International Forum - The Future of Rural People held in Saskatoon in October, 2003. Presenters for rural child care at the forum were Honourable John Godfrey, Jane Beach, Martha Friendly and Carol Gott.

    (j) Produced a public education package "Child Care.....We're Worth It!" which talks about the need for rural, remote and northern child care, dispells some of the myths about child care and gives ideas and suggestions as to how to support the development of community based child care services and supports.
